How to spend a weekend in Savannah

The first place I really got a chance to explore in the US was Savannah. It’s not a place I had ever heard of previously, let alone though to visit so I’m really grateful that I got the opportunity to spend a long weekend there.

For those of you that don’t know, Savannah is the oldest city in the state of Georgia and one of the oldest cities in the US. With such a long and rich history it’s no surprise that there’s an endless amount of things to see and do there. Here are some of my suggestions to keep you busy for a weekend in Savannah.

Do a city tour – A city tour is a perfect way to start your time in a place. It allows you to learn the history, visit key tourist attractions and get more recommendations of places to visit during your stay. Savannah has many options for city tours, everything from walking tours, trolley tours to horse and carriage tours. Plenty of choices to get you started.

Go on a riverboat cruise –  If you’ve finished exploring on the land why not take to the river! Many river cruise options also include dinner and entertainment.

Become a ghost hunter – Savannah has been named one of the most haunted towns in the USA. It’s long and fascinating history has often taken rather dark turns, homes were built on top of Native American burial sites and slave cemeteries. There have also been mass battles, fires and hurricanes leaving behind many a spirit. From this, a booming ghost tour trade has emerged. If you dare, take a night tour around some of the most haunted buildings, a carriage ride through the dark streets and listen to the spooky tales. Whichever tour you choose, searching for Savannah’s ghosts should be on your list.

Go shopping – Savannah is a great place to do some shopping. It has something for everyone from the latest high street shops to vintage bargains and souvenirs.

Have a picnic in the park – Savannah has some beautiful parks full of iconic sweeping trees. Take a trip to Forsyth Park, the largest in Savannah and sit by the famous fountain.

Satisfy your sweet tooth – Visit the river street sweet shop in the historic district and get some delicious treats.

Follow the Forrest Gump movie trail – Visit some of the locations featured in the film. Including the site of the iconic bench (although the bench was unfortunately just a movie prop!)

Visit a Rooftop Bar – After a long day of exploring the city, why not relax and grab a drink with a view. Savannah had some amazing rooftop bars are overlooking the city with spectacular views why not head to one for a sunset drink.

Visit the beach –  just a short drive from the busy centre of Savannah is Tybee Island. This quiet little beach town is perfect for a day trip to soak up the sun and take a dip.

Spot some dolphins while your there – Tybee Island isn’t only great for soaking up the sun it’s also a great place to go and spot some dolphins. There are lots of day trip cruises to choose from taking you out to the best spots to see them in their natural habitat.
